Film Cameras- Depth of Field and Exposure Latitude

 Working with our Film Cameras!

Our first assignment surrounding film cameras consisted of focusing on the technology of the analog camera and the technology of the enlargers and film rolls. This consisted of a lot of experimentation.

Correct Exposure, Exposure Latitude- Full Enlargement

Depth of Field - Enlargements

Other Image - Enlargement

Getting Started on Enlargements!!

First Exposures- Contact Sheet

Exposure Latitude and Depth of Field- Contact Sheet

Attempts at Contact Sheets:

Attempts at Enlarging:

enlargement timing tests

Learning enlargement- fuzzy corner and uneven sides. Also! I realized I had been putting my film in the wrong way up for the first couple of enlargements.

Getting closer, but still having easel trouble and making my 'frame' edges even.
All of my "Learning Attempts" for correct exposure, exposure latitude enlargement.

More timing tests!

Two attempts at enlargement for Depth of Field exposure- ended up being executed incorrectly- as well as these enlargements are not the best!! Tried again with the new subject matter to do the assignment correctly (above).
First "other image" enlargement, weird black around the border.

All enlargement Learning Prints for Depth of Field and Other Images.

My very first Film-Camera Exposures!! How exciting!

About to work in the dark! All set up for getting the film in the processing tank. Completing a task without my eyes was challenging and a strange experience.

Processed film!!

Exposure Latitude and Depth of Field Film (1)

Exposure Latitude: The image goes from underexposed, to correctly exposed, to overexposed by changing the aperture and the shutter speed. Each change is by 'one stop'.

-5    F5.6 / 1/2000
-4    F3.5 / 1/2000
-3    F3.5 / 1/1000
-2    F3.5 / 1/500
-1    F3.5 / 1/200
00    F3.5 / 1/125
+1    F3.5 / 1/60
+2    F3.5 / 1/30
+3    F3.5 / 1/15
+4    F3.5 / 1/8
+5    F3.5 / 1/4

Depth of Field: A correct exposure can be replicated with equal exposure and increased depth of field by changing the aperture and shutter speed by equal stops.

(My first exposures were executed incorrectly- reattempted later)

First Developed Film! So Exciting!
